The status quo of the bilingual scenic spot names in Suzhou Gardens is not satisfactory due to many reasons. The inappropriate or incorrect translations are ascribed to being nonstandard, namely lacking the guideline of translation norms. This paper will analyze the current versions and propose the new one under the theory of Translation Norms.

The thesis endows its practical significance. To begin with, translation takes charge of an honored mission of exchanging culture, aiming at providing a chance for foreigners to experience exotic customs while enjoying the nice scenery. For foreign tourists, paying a visit to the classical gardens is certainly a unique way of communicating with Chinese culture. Every construction in Suzhou Gardens (including halls, pavilions, towers, corridors, and so on) represents different meanings. Accurate and correct translations would explain the long-ago history to any foreign visitors who are unfamiliar with local culture otherwise, they would feel stumped in front of the confusing translation scripts.

Secondly, working under the norm theory is innovative. Most of the existing research is guided by Functionalist Translation Theory, which stands on the readers’ perspective. It is undeniable that Functionalist Translation Theory exerts an important role in translation. However, it is more like a cliche since too much research has been done. Translation Norms, on the contrary, give out a brand new insight. The theory starts from the translators’ sights and set some quantifiable rules that can be used to exam the current scripts and regulate the future ones. They deliver more precise, realistic, reliable, and ideal values.

1.Studies on Translation Norms

The Czech theorist Ji#213; Levn described translating as a decision-making process by quoting game theory. The process includes two extremes: one that can be predicated and the other that is totally unpredictable. Each of them represents a choice from among a given set of alternatives and decides the following step. Levn also pointed out that there were two decisive norms during translation: one that was reproductive and concerned with how to represent the original, and the other that was productive and concerned with the wellformedness of the new text. Allen Popovig agreed with Levn in 1976 that the translator’s freedom of choice was constrained by norms. Both Levn and Popovig drew on the Czech structuralist Jan Muka#213;ovskn, who in the 1930s and 1940s had described the individual work of art as “a complex tangle of norms” and a “confrontation of heterogeneous norms” (1978, p. 52), adding that audiences might well project different norms on a work of art than those initially observed by its creator.
